Type of Caulk

Siding caulk also comes in various formulations. Caulks are mostly silicone, latex, or a mix. They come in squeeze tubes or cartridges. With a cartridge and caulk gun, a more continuous bead is produced than with a squeeze tube.

Latex caulk is easy to apply, refill, and paint. Commercial roofing contractors recommend using this caulk for gaps that are easy to clean with soap and water. However, silicone caulk is tough to replace and not all types are paintable. But it’s more flexible and resistant to heat and sunlight. This caulk is perfect for filling gaps and outlasting latex.

When Is Caulk Used on Siding?

Corners, cracks and butt joints are frequent places to utilize siding caulk to prevent moisture buildup. To avoid harm, it’s crucial to know where not to use siding caulk:

  1. The application of caulk on wood sidings, such as shakes and shingles, may prevent natural expansion and contraction.
  2. Unless there is no flashing, caulk should not be used on fiber cement siding.
  3. Trim boards that sit on top of the siding should not be caulked. It can obstruct airflow and retain moisture under the siding.
  4. Siding caulk should not be used on horizontal siding sheets or tongue-and-groove panel edges. These panels are made to shed water and circulate air. Caulk could obstruct the panels.

Choosing the Right Caulk
